Expert photography and videography guidance from professional wildlife photographer Ross Long and the Apex Ocean Dive team including Alex Sharks.
Five unforgettable days swimming alongside giant fevers of mobula rays and encounters with cetaceans including dolphins, orcas and blue whales.
Intimate Group Size of eight people for better wildlife interactions and photography education
Join me in Baja, Mexico for a small group photography and videography workshop during one of the most powerful times of year in the Sea of Cortez.
May marks peak season for mobula ray fevers, when thousands of rays move through the open ocean in vast, flowing formations just beneath the surface. This time of year also brings opportunities to encounter a range of cetaceans as they travel through these nutrient rich waters. Cetaceans are all whales, dolphins, and porpoises. In Baja, that essentially means large whales and oceanic dolphins moving through or feeding in the Sea of Cortez. We may be lucky enough to encounter dolphins including common, bottlenose, and spotted dolphins. Larger whales are also possible, including blue whales and fin whales. Orcas also move through the region following food sources.
Each day is guided by conditions, wildlife, and intuition rather than a fixed route. There is no chasing moments here. We move slowly, observe patiently, and allow the ocean to lead.
This isn’t just an expedition, it’s a full workshop, crafted for those seeking depth, connection, and adventure. It caters for all people that are seeking a deeper connection with nature. This means that if you are a photographer, it presents you with the opportunity to capture photos like you've only ever dreamt of and you'll have access to my knowledge and experience to help guide you in improving your skills.
Taking Ross Long’s underwater photography workshop was truly one of the best experiences I have ever completed. Ross has a rare combination of skill, genuine passion, and the ability to teach in a way that feels both approachable and exciting. From the moment the workshop began, he created an atmosphere that was professional, supportive, and incredibly fun.
Ross doesn’t just teach you how to take beautiful underwater images — he helps you understand why certain techniques work and how to think about light and movement below the surface. His guidance in the water was calm, clear, and confidence-boosting.
I came away with not only a portfolio of images I’m genuinely proud of, but also a deeper appreciation for the craft and a whole new set of skills I can’t wait to keep building on. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting your underwater journey, Ross’s workshop is an unforgettable experience that will elevate your work and leave you feeling inspired.
I couldn’t recommend this workshop more highly. If you’re considering it — do it. You’ll come away a better photographer and with memories that stay with you long after you’ve dried off.

Ross is an absolute legend! His knowledge of underwater photography and marine life is incredible, and he’s so generous with his expertise and time. He catered to every level in the group and brought amazing energy and positivity, making the trip really welcoming.
Thanks to Ross’s guidance and local knowledge we saw so much. A highlight was our treat of mantas surface-feeding through the coral on a day with unreal visibility. My Lady Elliot Island experience was unforgettable thanks to him. Highly recommend!

Ross went over and above to ensure all attendees expectations were met. If you want to learn more about nature and wildlife as well as photography, Lady Elliot Island and Ross are a perfect match.

I recently joined Ross Long’s photography retreat to Lady Elliot Island, and it was truly a life-changing experience. As someone who has always been afraid of the ocean, I arrived feeling nervous and even a little petrified. From the very beginning, Ross was warm, welcoming, and reassuring, which made all the difference.
Throughout the week, I not only learned so much about photography and editing but also had the chance to experience the magic of the ocean in a way I never thought possible. Swimming alongside turtles, manta rays, and so many other incredible sea creatures was both humbling and exhilarating.
By the end of the retreat, my fear had shifted to gratitude — I even found myself needing to have one last swim to say goodbye to the turtles. This retreat wasn’t just about photography; it was about connection, courage, and seeing the world through a new lens.
Thank you, Ross, for creating such a supportive and unforgettable experience.

This experience is for people who feel most alive in nature and are craving something deeper than a typical trip or tour. It’s for ocean lovers, adventurers, photographers, videographers, and curious beginners who want to learn by doing, not sitting in a classroom. You don’t need to be a professional or have years of experience, just a genuine interest in the ocean, a willingness to learn, and the ability to be present in open water. If you’re drawn to meaningful wildlife encounters, ethical exploration, creative growth, and shared experiences that leave a lasting impact, this workshop is designed for you.
During this immersive experience, you’ll learn directly in the field from Ross Long, an award winning wildlife photographer with a deep passion for the ocean and marine life. The focus is on building practical skills that translate into real results, from understanding animal behaviour and reading ocean conditions to mastering composition, light, and camera settings in dynamic environments. Learning goes beyond a single subject, covering underwater photography and videography, open ocean shooting, landscape and lifestyle imagery, drone techniques where conditions allow, and storytelling through cohesive visual narratives. The goal is not just to capture individual images, but to develop the confidence and creative approach to document nature in a way that feels intentional, ethical, and true to your own style.
Whether you’re snorkelling or joining from a freediving background, this experience caters for all as no freedive experience is required. Similarly it does not matter where you are in your photography journey. You can be an absolute beginner or more advanced. I will be able to personalise the education so that we can get you to the next level in your photography.
There are a huge range of animals that we will encounter in the Sea of Cortez including
Experience an unforgettable week in Baja, Mexico, combining dynamic open ocean wildlife encounters, immersive time in nature, and hands on photography guidance suited to all skill levels. This workshop blends adventure, learning, and storytelling, creating space for genuine connection with one of the most productive and alive marine environments on the planet.
Arrive in La Paz and transfer to La Ventana, where we’ll settle into our accommodation and ease into the rhythm of Baja. The afternoon is relaxed, with time to unpack, meet the group, and prepare for the days ahead. We’ll come together for a welcome and introduction session covering safety, ethics, expectations, and how the week will unfold. We’ll also review everyone’s camera setup and run an education session on ideal settings, making sure you’re fully prepared for the first day on the water. The day finishes with a beautiful Mexican dinner, a chance to connect, ask questions, and set intentions for the experience. The priority is to ensure everyone feels comfortable, confident, and ready for five days of epic ocean encounters.
Our first full day on the water begins early, heading out with experienced captains and marine biologists into the open ocean. Each day is guided by conditions and wildlife rather than a fixed plan, allowing encounters to unfold naturally. Education focuses on camera setup, open ocean shooting techniques, and preparing for fast moving wildlife encounters. As we begin to find our rhythm, time on the water is balanced with rest, reflection, and learning.
This day often delivers a wide range of encounters, including large mobula ray fevers. We’ll focus on refining composition, improving in water techniques, and learning how to move and interact calmly and ethically to create the strongest possible images. We’ll also begin shaping the story we want to tell, exploring how different focal lengths, camera systems, and creative approaches can be used to capture a variety of moments. The evening is spent unwinding over an incredible meal, reflecting on the day, and sharing questions and insights as a group.
Building on the foundation set the day before, education expands into a deeper focus on in water techniques and understanding animal behaviour. We explore how to read situations as they unfold, learning when to move, when to hold position, and how to anticipate moments without forcing them. Emphasis is placed on calm, ethical approaches, body positioning, breath control, and timing, allowing you to blend into the environment rather than disrupt it. Throughout the day, you’ll receive in water guidance and real time feedback during encounters, helping you refine your technique, build confidence, and maximise photographic opportunities while always prioritising the well being of the wildlife.
These next days bring everything together. Long, immersive days are spent on the water searching for wildlife, with education evolving naturally based on what we’re seeing, experiencing, and creating in real time. As confidence grows, the focus shifts toward refining your shooting style, developing creative direction, and learning how to work fluidly in unpredictable open ocean environments. We begin connecting the dots between capture and creation, moving into editing sessions that cover Lightroom and Premiere Pro workflows, helping you shape images and video into cohesive, intentional work.
Storytelling becomes a key focus, with discussions around sequencing, narrative, and sharing your work in a way that feels authentic and meaningful, including how to approach social media with purpose. By this point, the group dynamic naturally deepens, shaped by shared experiences and time in the water. Evenings are slower and reflective, gathering around food and an open fire to review moments from the day, ask questions, and let the experience settle.
We finish the experience with a relaxed final morning, easing into the day and sharing a big breakfast together. There’s space to reflect on the week, revisit favourite moments, and share final thoughts as a group. With no rush, we say our farewells before transfers return to La Paz, carrying home not just images and skills, but the memories, connections, and perspective gained from time spent together in the ocean.
This workshop is designed so that everything is taken care of, removing the need to think about logistics or planning. With transport, accommodation, meals, and time on the water all organised, you’re free to focus on what matters most, being present, learning, and immersing yourself fully in photography and meaningful wildlife encounters.
The cost of the workshop depends on the accommodation option you choose. The Standard Experience, based on shared accommodation in a house with shared rooms, is priced at AUD $6,795. The Luxury Experience, which includes a private room in a hotel, is priced at AUD $8,895. Both options include the full workshop experience, all ocean sessions, education, meals, transfers, and support throughout the week. All meals are included throughout the workshop, allowing you to stay fully focused on the experience without needing to plan or organise food. Each day includes breakfast, packed lunches on ocean safari days, and shared dinners in the evenings. Meals are fresh, nourishing, and thoughtfully prepared to support long days on the water, while also creating time for the group to come together, unwind, and reflect over good food at the end of each day.

This experience is catered for everyone. From absolute beginner snorkellers to advanced snorkellers and beginner photographers to advance photographers. The purpose of the group sessions is to learn and experience together. This isn’t just a expedition it’s a full workshop, crafted for those seeking depth, connection, and adventure. It caters for all people that are seeking a deeper connection with nature.
Safety is always the top priority, especially when it comes to encounters like orcas. Swimming with orcas is only ever considered when conditions are calm, the animals are relaxed, and experienced captains and marine biologists determine it is appropriate. Orcas in Baja are wild, free ranging animals, and interactions are entirely on their terms. We never chase, surround, or pressure wildlife, and entering the water only happens when the behaviour of the animals clearly indicates it is safe and respectful to do so. While orca encounters are never guaranteed, when they do occur they are managed with extreme care, clear protocols, and a strong ethical framework to ensure the safety of both guests and animals at all times.
Absolutely not, everyone will still have a fantastic experience in the water with an array of marine life. For those interested, I will have a GoPro, DJI Action Pro, Ace 2 Pro, Insta 360 and a Joby SeaPal for phones available for guests to use.
I will have a GoPro, Insta 360, Ace 2 Pro, DJI Action 5 and a Joby SeaPal for phones available for guests to use.
It is essential that all guests purchase their own travel insurance.
A moderate level of fitness is expected. You’ll be getting in and out of boats, swimming, and spending time in the ocean. Being confident in the water makes the experience more enjoyable.
Not every animal we encounter can be entered with, and this is an important part of maintaining safety and ethical wildlife practices. In Mexico, it is illegal to swim with baleen whales, including humpback, blue, and fin whales, and we strictly follow all local regulations. Our experienced skippers and marine biologists carefully assess animal behaviour at all times to determine whether entering the water is appropriate. Some animals may be shy, travelling with purpose, or engaged in behaviours such as feeding or social interactions that make water entry unsafe or disruptive. For example, heightened surface activity like tail slapping or rapid directional changes can indicate stress or social behaviour, and in these situations we remain on the boat and observe respectfully. Entering the water only occurs when animals choose to interact and conditions are calm, ensuring the safety of both guests and wildlife.
A bad weather plan will be put in place to ensure that the experience is not badly affected. We must also have an appreciation that we cannot control the weather and we will always make the most of what we get.
