Taking Ross Long’s underwater photography workshop was truly one of the best experiences I have ever completed. Ross has a rare combination of skill, genuine passion, and the ability to teach in a way that feels both approachable and exciting. From the moment the workshop began, he created an atmosphere that was professional, supportive, and incredibly fun.
Ross doesn’t just teach you how to take beautiful underwater images — he helps you understand why certain techniques work and how to think about light and movement below the surface. His guidance in the water was calm, clear, and confidence-boosting.
I came away with not only a portfolio of images I’m genuinely proud of, but also a deeper appreciation for the craft and a whole new set of skills I can’t wait to keep building on. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting your underwater journey, Ross’s workshop is an unforgettable experience that will elevate your work and leave you feeling inspired.
I couldn’t recommend this workshop more highly. If you’re considering it — do it. You’ll come away a better photographer and with memories that stay with you long after you’ve dried off.

Ross is an absolute legend! His knowledge of underwater photography and marine life is incredible, and he’s so generous with his expertise and time. He catered to every level in the group and brought amazing energy and positivity, making the trip really welcoming.
Thanks to Ross’s guidance and local knowledge we saw so much. A highlight was our treat of mantas surface-feeding through the coral on a day with unreal visibility. My Lady Elliot Island experience was unforgettable thanks to him. Highly recommend!

Ross went over and above to ensure all attendees expectations were met. If you want to learn more about nature and wildlife as well as photography, Lady Elliot Island and Ross are a perfect match.

I recently joined Ross Long’s photography retreat to Lady Elliot Island, and it was truly a life-changing experience. As someone who has always been afraid of the ocean, I arrived feeling nervous and even a little petrified. From the very beginning, Ross was warm, welcoming, and reassuring, which made all the difference.
Throughout the week, I not only learned so much about photography and editing but also had the chance to experience the magic of the ocean in a way I never thought possible. Swimming alongside turtles, manta rays, and so many other incredible sea creatures was both humbling and exhilarating.
By the end of the retreat, my fear had shifted to gratitude — I even found myself needing to have one last swim to say goodbye to the turtles. This retreat wasn’t just about photography; it was about connection, courage, and seeing the world through a new lens.
Thank you, Ross, for creating such a supportive and unforgettable experience.

From mastering composition and lighting to understanding whale behaviour, Ross will guide you every step of the way to ensure you capture the perfect shot. The learning doesn't just stop with whales, Ross will teach you various aspects of photography covering underwater, portrait, landscape, drone and lifestyle. Mo'orea offers it all.
Whether you’re snorkelling or joining from a freediving background, this experience caters for all as no freedive experience is required. Similarly it does not matter where you are in your photography journey. You can be an absolute beginner or more advanced. I will be able to personalise the education so that we can get you to the next level in your photography.
We will not only encounter humpback whales, we will also encounter a large array of other animals including:
Experience an unforgettable week in Moorea, combining wildlife encounters, immersive nature experiences, and photography guidance designed for all skill levels. This retreat blends adventure, storytelling, and personal connection with one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
Arrive in Moorea and settle into your accommodation before joining the welcome session with Ross Long. This introductory gathering will outline the week ahead, explore your photography goals, and provide a safety briefing for our wildlife and water adventures. Afterwards, we’ll set out on a scenic tour of the island, stopping at some of its most breathtaking locations, including a sunset over the mountains with a picturesque swing where you can sway and soak in the view. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed group dinner, connect with fellow guests, and share excitement for the experiences to come.
Start the day early with a breathtaking sunrise session on the lagoon, capturing rays, reef sharks, and the soft morning light dancing across the water. Learn on-water photography techniques to master movement, composition, and capturing the essence of marine life. After lunch, participate in an editing workshop to review your morning shots, or spend the afternoon exploring the local village or relaxing on the beach. Later, we’ll meet the Wildma crew for an informative presentation and introduction to humpback whales and what our boat sessions will look like. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely island tour, culminating in a magical sunset beneath hundreds of swaying palm trees.
Board Wildma, led by native guides Temoana and Tearenui, for a full day of swimming with and photographing humpback whales. Learn ethical wildlife interaction techniques while capturing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Focus on framing, composition, and storytelling, with guidance on capturing action shots and the environment. Return at sunset for a debrief and optional post-processing session or enjoy a beach sunset and dinner.
Spend three more full days on the water with humpback whales, building on your skills and confidence. These sessions focus on capturing behavioural sequences, action shots of breaches and tail slaps, and incorporating Mo'orea’s stunning environment into your storytelling. Fingers crossed for more wildlife interactions such as dolphins, pilot whales and the incredible oceanic white tip. Onboard lunch and photography guidance continue throughout the day, with evening editing and narrative-building workshops to help turn your images into compelling stories. There will be a range of masterclasses from social media, to photo and video editing. Our final night will include pizza under the palm trees at sunset.
Conclude the retreat with an optional sunrise shoot at the lagoon with the sharks and rays, followed by a group reflection session. Review your favorite moments, share lessons learned, and receive guidance on final editing techniques. Enjoy a farewell lunch before departing with a curated collection of images, enhanced skills, and memories of an extraordinary connection with nature.
We’ll be staying in a beautiful Airbnb just steps from the water, offering a serene seaside setting perfect for relaxation and inspiration. The property features a full range of amenities, including a fully equipped kitchen and modern bathrooms, and guests can choose between private or shared rooms to suit their preference.
You fly into the main airport for Tahiti, French Polynesia which is Faaʼa International Airport. You then make your way from the airport to the port (in a taxi) and get a ferry to Mo'orea which takes 30 minutes. Assistance will be provided with the best recommendations for arriving safely and promptly.
Not all meals are included. Onboard we will have a lunch and refreshments provided. On the final day we will enjoy a pizza evening under the sunset palm trees. The rest of the meals will need to be covered by you. We will have access to our own kitchen so breakfast, lunch and dinner can be cooked by yourself or as a good. You also have the option to eat out.
No! You don’t need to be certified or a strong freediver to join our whale swims and ocean adventures. We offer guidance for all levels, whether you’re a seasoned freediver or a first-time snorkeller. You just need to be comfortable in the ocean and able to swim 200m unassisted for multiple days in a row.
Snorkel gear is included as part of the experience, however if you have your own I recommend bringing it.
Wetsuit, wetsuit top and wetsuit socks
Mask & Fins
Weight belt (also available to hire)
Camera gear (anything from professional gear to action cameras)
Laptop
A comprehensive list of equipment will be sent to you when you receive the Welcome Guide.
While we can help with gear, we strongly encourage you to bring your own snorkel, mask, fins and wetsuit that you have tested and are comfortable with! We have safety vests on board of our vessel. It should be noted that French Polynesia government require you to wear a wetsuit top of 2-3mm in thickness, otherwise you will be given a floatation device.
This experience is catered for everyone. From absolute beginner snorkellers to advanced snorkellers and beginner photographers to advance photographers. The purpose of the group sessions is to learn and experience together. This isn’t just a photography tour, it’s a full retreat, crafted for those seeking depth, connection, and adventure. It caters for all people that are seeking a deeper connection with nature.
Yes. Our experienced team follows strict safety protocols and adheres to French Polynesian wildlife interaction guidelines. We approach every encounter with respect for the whales’ space and behaviour. As with any wildlife activity, there are always risks, but we work hard to ensure your experience is both safe and respectful.
Absolutely not, everyone will still have a fantastic experience in the water with an array of marine life. For those interested, I will have a GoPro, Insta 360 and a Joby SeaPal for phones available for guests to use.
I will have a GoPro, Insta 360, DJI Action 5 and a Joby SeaPal for phones available for guests to use.
It is essential that all guests purchase their own travel insurance.
A moderate level of fitness is expected. You’ll be getting in and out of boats, swimming, and spending time in the ocean. Being confident in the water makes the experience more enjoyable.
Our experienced skipper and crew will assess the whale’s behaviour before deciding if we can get in the water with it. Sometimes whales are a little shy and sometimes they might be involved in a ‘heat run’ (mating behaviours). A heat run is often accompanied by lots of tail and peck fin slaps in which case it would not be safe to enter the water.
These are wild animals in their natural habitat, so whale sightings and whale swims can’t be guaranteed. That said, our team has a strong track record and deep knowledge of the area. We’ll do our absolute best to give you an unforgettable experience on the water. Over the course of four full days we should almost certainly see whales.
A bad weather plan will be put in place to ensure that the experience is not badly affected. We must also have an appreciation that we cannot control the weather and we will always make the most of what we get.
